Does it make Sense to Change Credit Cards?

No matter how long you have had your credit card, there could come a day when you feel that making a change would be in your best interest. Before doing so, however, you want to make sure that this change is for the better. The last thing you want to do is cancel your current card, just to find that your new one does not offer you as many benefits.

Everybody has their own reason for considering this change. Here are three times when you should look into making a move:

1. Balance transfer. Do you have a large balance on a high interest credit card? If so, you may want to transfer the balance to a new credit card, such as one with a zero percent introductory APR. By doing this, you will find yourself saving a lot of money on interest every month.

2. Better rewards program. If you are going to use your credit card, you might as well get something in return for the money you are spending. With the right rewards program in place, you can collect points for each dollar you spend.

Note: many people have carried the same credit card for many years. While there is nothing wrong with being loyal, if it is not attached to a rewards program you are leaving a lot on the table.

3. Lower interest rate. If you pay off your credit card in full every month, this may not be that big of a deal. That being said, anytime you carry a balance you have to be worried about how much you will pay in interest. Compare your current rate to what other companies are offering. Can you make a change that will save you money?

Note: don’t get sucked in by a low introductory rate. You need to know what the interest rate will be after the intro period runs out.

For some people, changing from one credit card to another is a hassle. For others, those who are always looking to better their financial situation, making this change is something they are more than willing to do.
