What?! That is. It it possible to cut $6.9 million in educational funding without the children being affected? Do the powers at-be want a society of children with little or no education? Here in Chicago..some small polictians and church leaders are forming a boycott on the first day of school. Reason being..because Chicago funding is about $10,000 per year, per child...and children in the surrounding suburbs are getting $17,000 per year , per child. Remember state funding is based on how many children are in school...if children don't go to school the first day...guess what....someone didn't think this on through.

sorry i took up a forum for this but i thought i would let you guys know school starts here in cumberland county wed. the 27th but they are having to cut alot of stuff like buses and nurses and more here is a brief summery

— The Cumberland County Board of Education considered a wide range of cuts as discussion continued on its 2008-’09 budget at a work session Thursday night.
The proposed cuts could affect several items in the following categories: instruction, alternative school, special education, vocational department, health services, regular instruction support, special education support, extracurricular support, director, principals, operation and maintenance of plant, transportation, Central Office and capital outlay.
Personnel impacted by the plan included the support staff, which could have their pay frozen at last year’s rate and their number of hours and extra work days reduced if the board performs the cuts. Plus, up to 8 nurses could lose their jobs as well as each assistant principal position at the elementary schools and two at the high schools.
Based on the figures prepared by Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle, the total amount of reductions equals more than $6.9 million.
Before making any cuts to personnel, 2nd District representative Robert Safdie suggested cutting all transportation entirely, about $2.7 million, and all extracurricular activities.
No action was taken at the meeting, but the board plans to make a decision on the cuts Friday. A work session will be held at 7 p.m. at Stone Memorial High School. A special called meeting will take place immediately after to ratify the budget and set a date for schools to open in Cumberland County. The public is invited to attend.

thanks guys for all your support in this i dont know what we are gonna do if they cut buses because there will be alot of kids not going to school and here if your child misses 20 days of school you have to go to court and explain why your child missed so many days.

We have to pay public schools just to send our children to go to school. I thought taxes took care of that!

Pamela, I will pray for better days for you and your family and for all those families who are in a tight position due to the declining economy.

Still no school in Cumberland County-DOS working diligently on budget for Thursday work session
Schools in Cumberland County remain closed more than a week after the BOE voted to delay the start of school. Monday, Budget Chair Lynn Tollett and Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle seemed optimistic an agreement could be reached between the county and the school system over the budget. However, another emotionally charged lengthy meeting Monday left school officials wondering what cuts are going to have to be made. During Monday's meeting, several motions were made to raise property taxes to fund the multi-million dollar deficit, each met with defeat. A motion to give the school system 3 cents from Debt Services eventually passed 11 to 7. DOS VanWinkle and the school board are now faced with the daunting task of what programs and personnel to cut. The BOE has a work session scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 and SMHS-the meeting is open to the public.

sorry guys for putting this (mike) here but they had a meeting last night and "NO SCHOOL HAS OF NOW AND THEY DONT KNOW WHEN IT WILL START) the director of schools says we dont have any money to start school for 2 months but she hopes to open before Oct. here in Tennessee the school days are 180 days and they told her we cant go over that but the state has a law that school "has" to start at a certain time im still confused and shocked.

Any updates on school starting? This is absurd. I'm even hearing about school districts cutting bus service, this is an outrage.
I'll tell you what, move to Texas, we don't pay anything to send our kids to school here, it's covered by property taxes. No book fees, no bus fees, nothing. The schools where I live are excellent to boot. When I lived in Indiana I paid out the ying yang for books for my older dd and the school district she was in was pathetic.

Pamela,

I will be praying for you, your children, and all of the families who will undoubtedly suffer the expense of having no place for the children to go during the day. Day care is ridiculous, and most of us barely have job security as it is. I can't even imagine telling my manager that i would need 60 days off b/c school is not starting till October and he doesn't pay me enough for gas and daycare as it is. :scared: I can't even bear to think of families with more than 2 kids, how are they going to manage? My prayers and thoughts are with you Pamela.

Due to budget concerns-SCHOOL WILL NOT START MONDAY IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY.
In the words of 9th District School Board Rep Dan Schlafer, "a line has been drawn in the sand." At a special called Friday meeting, the Board of Education voted to delay the opening of Cumberland County Schools indefinitely until the 2008-09 school budget is resolved. Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle reported that earlier this week, Cumberland County Commissioners on the Budget Committee sent the proposed $48.6 million budget back to the BOE for a trim of $5 million. The DOS stated that in order to make the cuts, educational programs and most likely positions would have to be cut back. After much discussion, a motion was made by Rob Safdie and seconded by Dan Schlafer to remove $2 million dollars from the school fund balance to partially make up the deficit, with the county making up the $3 million difference. That motion passed unanimously. A second motion was made by Safdie and seconded by Mary Smith to delay the opening of schools until the problems with the budget are ironed out. The motion passed 6-3, with Safdie, Smith, Brian Houston, Gordon Davis, and Chair Shirley Parris voting for. Ricky Smith, Orville Hale, and Victor Randolph voted against the motion. Dan Schlafer, who originally passed, changed his vote to yes, and he and several BOE members said that they were totally offended being placed in the situation by the county. Cumberland County Schools will not start on Monday, however the Meet the CCHS Jets and Elementary Jamboree will go on as scheduled Saturday
(this was the last sports related thing that will be done until school starts)

this is what is going on sorry so long!
