tia530's review: Callout Comment Received this card after responding to an pre-approval offer via US Mail. I have used it several times and pay the balance in full before statement date.

It offers cash back rewards, and cash access via, checks, direct deposit into checking account (this feature is available after you make several payments via your checking account) and ATM withdrawal.

The cash access is not that great, only 10% of your credit limit, for me $300.00 I don't do cash advances but if I ever had to resort to one I would use another card.

Initially the balance transfer offer was 0% until April 09 but according to my online account summary it's 9.9% though I'm not sure why. I've never used the balance transfer feature. Overall, it's a good card to have, has lot's of different card designs to fit your likes/personality if you're into that kinda thing.

Customer service is top notch. I made a purchase online with a retailer but never received the items. Discover wasted no time with the charge back and crediting my account, less than 24 hrs.

The site is easy to use, with a nice layout. Payments are posted fairly quick. I plan to build a great relationship with Discover!

Remarks I love Discover, it makes my mouth water. They have a great online account access and I like the fact that you can get cash back at grocery stores and Wal-Mart and it gets counted as a purchase.

They might be showing 9.9% on new balance transfers-they offer balance transfers all the time.

Discover Card likes to see utilization with the account so you should get automatic CLI's with them. Take my advice and do not request one from them because they do a hard inquiry and the CLI is never as high as it would be if they do it automatically.

Congratulations! It Pays to Discover.

Remarks Right now, this is my favorite card!! Payments post quick, by 5 pm on the day its made, and the cash back adds up very quickly. I just received an extra 10$ bonus by making a purchase by 11/14. They run a lot of cashback promotions, and have one of the best designed card choices on the planet.

Very conservative, they like low utilization and constant card usage. CLI's happen around the 6 month mark, and are quite generous from what I've been told by customer service.

Starting in Jan 09' 5% cashback is in hotels, car rentals, and plane tickets in case anyone was wondering for the first quarter.

As Colonative stated above, cli requests by cardholders result in a hard pull. Let them show how it pays to discover, but keep your scores as high as you can.

Tia, you made a great choice here!!! Enjoy the card, a lot of us do :-)

Remarks On your new card! Remember to sign up for the 5% back on promotions. Through December it is for groceries, restaurants and movie rentals! They rotate every 3 months!

Remarks I, too, am a new cardmember (Sept' 08) and I love my card. I just wish more merchants accepted it. That's funny, because my credit line is only $500 and my cash line is $300, too. Go figure! Enjoy your new card!!!

It Really Does Pay To Discover! User Icon on 2008-11-16

Remarks Thanks everyone, I will definitely continue to use this card, you can't go wrong it. The rewards are great. Thanks for the heads up on those 09 rewards Thomas1, i'll be doing some traveling first of the year and will surely be grateful for the car/hotel/air rewards. The card designs are so fresh! Makes you wanna pick one for every day of the month, lol.

The good part... They're free.

Cireone, Trans Union report was pulled for this card, at the time my score was 645, still is actually.

Charonh, I wonder if $300 limit for all cards? Anyone care to inform us about the cash access on their account.

Thanks

Remarks Cash advance limit on Discover is 10% of the credit line generally.

My limit is 4k, cash advance limit is 400$. As the credit line moves up, so will the cash line.

Can't understand why the cashline on Cireone is 300$.

Go to the site if you want to access cash and click that button for info

Cash Advance Limits User Icon on 2008-11-17

Remarks My cash advance limit has always been 50% of my purchase credit line. I have a $7,800 limit now, my cash is at $3,900.

I want to stress though that the Discover Card should not be used as a cash advance card for several reasons:

1) Discover uses the dual-cycle method for their interest rates, so you could end up paying interest on last months interest!

2)Most grocery stores and Wal-Mart will allow you to take $20 or $40 for cash over your purchase and Discover will count that as a purchase.

The Discover Card is great because it pays you money just to use their card, don't give it back to them plus more in fees. Just a thought.

Remarks Agree with that Colonative, don't use card for cash advances due to that dual cycle.

Strange as to why cash advance availablility is different now. I'm assuming maybe new accounts are only subject to a small percentage of the credit line now. Maybe accounts just recently issued in the last few months, or new policy. Sometimes as it ages, they release more cash availability to the account.

Thanks for the info guys!

Remarks Just checked the site, and the 5% rewards are already posted for 2009'

Looks like they have stayed the same for each quarter

Remarks Per my response above, 5% cashbacks aren't posted for 2009' I misread this. I assume it will be posted by the end of the year for period starting in 2009
