bj's review: Callout Comment I visit this site from time 2 time and feel a lot of you on here are very ungrateful. First off, you are the one's with bad credit and you complain about how these companies are charging higher interest rates and other fee(s) associated with the card you chose to get. It's my complete understanding that no other bank would even accept you let alone look at your application due to your terrible history of paying your bills on-time and taking care of your responsibility. Alot of you just complain about everything calling these companies a rip-off but again you are the one's with terrible credit histories. So ask yourself, aren't you the one's ripping them off by not paying them?? Everyone deserves a second chance... But the financial institutions are willing to give you a credit line to help you out. Keep in mind, based on your credit history they are the one's taking the risk... And all there asking is that you pay them appropriate fee(s) that would be feasible in case you don't pay them. This world is imperfect we all know. But we also know people will never be pleased without the final outcome of something unless it suits there needs. Have you even went to American Express, Discover, Chase, Citibank or Bank of America's credit card sites and try to apply for there cards?? No I'm sure you haven't. And it's because you already know what the outcome will be. DENIAL!!! So you subject yourself to go to the "rebuilding credit card" sites because you know in someway they may give you a chance. And when they do approve your request for a line of credit and ask you to pay additional fee(s) you complain... People face reality and start thinking with a clear mind. If one of your friends always borrows money from other friends and you know they never pay anyone back... Would you loan them any money?? Stop blaming these credit card companies for your mistakes and start blaming yourself. The sooner you start doing that the sooner your life could be more enjoyable!!!

My Legal Battle With This Company. User Icon on 2007-07-26

Remarks First things first. I will address the comment left by BJ who posted Stop Complaining.

Dear BJ,

Not all of us have credit problems because we are terrible at handling our finances, as you stated in your rude and insulting comment. There are a lot of consumers out there, such as myself that ended up in this kind of situation through no fault of their own.
I was in a horrific car accident eight years ago. I had to learn how to walk again.
Prior to this, my credit was perfect. I had just bought a house, had my own car, had store credit cards, an excellent job, and was going back to college when someone decided they were in a hurry and ran a red light, at a speed of 20 miles over the limit. I had to be removed out of the car by the fire department since my legs and hips were pined.
In mere seconds, I lost everything. I have a permanent back injury that gets worse over time. At the age of 32, everything I had worked hard for was gone.
INCLUDING MY PERFECT CREDIT.
I am disabled and cannot work. I was so incapacitated after the accident that my father did his best to handle things for me, however, his wife, my mom, had died of cancer just five days prior to the accident.

My point is this.
Assumptions and labeling all persons who apply for cards like these to try and rebuild their lives is shameful. We are not all deadbeats who do not know how to handle our own funds.

On to Continental Finance.

Unfortunately companies like theirs try to take advantage of people in my type of situation. After you receive their card, the terms are not the same as when you applied. I am no fool, and I make sure to read everything before applying for something like this. I also make sure that I keep a copy of the terms they present when you are applying.

Within ONE WEEK of receiving my card from them in the mail, the telephone calls began, asking me for the NEXT MONTH'S payment. THEY CALLED ME EVERY SINGLE DAY.
After I made my next months payment, when it was due, within one week I was slapped with a finance charge that was supposed to have been included in my payment. They had charged me twice. Instantly I was charged an over the account limit fee.
THEIR MISTAKE HAD CAUSED MY ACCOUNT TO GO OVER THE LIMIT.

In my initial communications with them regarding same, I was treated as if I were a deadbeat consumer that did not know how to pay her bills. They were arrogant, rude and threatening.

In the next series of calls, they admitted their error, however, they stated that they would NOT FIX IT UNTIL I MADE ANOTHER PAYMENT, which of course was NOT EVEN DUE YET. They wanted it immediately or the false charges would stay!

My next step? While on the telephone with them, I requested the card be canceled, I cut up the card and asked where should I mail the card back to them. I was literally laughed at by the woman on the other end of the phone. I wanted them to have proof that I did this.
I also informed them that IF I made a payment BEFORE they removed the charges that they ADMITTED should not be there, it would be the same as my acknowledging that I actually owed this money when in fact, I did not.

They refused. Then they threatened non specific "legal action".

I then filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Continental Finance for fraudulent credit card practices and consumer harassment.

Continental Finance continues to call my home two to three times a day, every single day, anywhere from eight am until nine pm. I have blocked their number once. The calls then started showing up as unknown, which I cannot block. I have repeated to them 3 times since, that I have filed said complaint and that until they remove the charges which they STILL ADMIT are their own error, they will receive no further payments from me.

In the meantime, instead of removing their mistake, they keep adding MORE charges, such as late fees, more over the limit fees and on and on. In one call, they tried to convince me that all the over the limit charges were PURCHASES made by me !! Now it was my turn to laugh. It is a bit impossible to buy items from a store with a cut up credit card.

They have now given me three different account balances and two different payment amounts due on top of all of this other chaos that they ADMIT they created, but REFUSE to correct.

This company preys upon consumers. I would advise that no one apply for their credit cards. It is now eight twenty pm, and they called for the third time today, while I am typing this.

Remarks Hi, this is Bj. I wrote a comment about sum ppl on this site complaining about credit card companies they feel are taking "advantage" of there situation. Secondly Kimmi, sense you took first. I apalogize about the situation you were in with the accident and all. The post I made excluded ppl like urself. You have to understand sum have actually admitted to ruining there own credit and expect the ccc to just hand them a card and forget the damage they caused themselves. The sad thing is ppl like yourself get caught up in the situation of being labeled as a credit risk. My thing is due to ur circumstances, who's 2 tell who's who?? Ofcourse this alone isn't ur fault. But I guess it's the world we live n. Atleast you know regardless of what I think you urself know the truth. Hey, anything can happen 2 anyone including me. But for the one's who admit they ruined there own credit by there own selfish means... I have no pity on them.
