Got an invitation in the mail to apply. Got the 7-10 day letter. Called and was told I was declined. Too many inquiries - 9 6 of which are from shopping from an auto loan. Also stated I had too many new accounts. Called the backdoor number twice and still declined.

Unfortunate. Citi is similar to Discover in that they are sensitive to inquiries and new accounts. You may need to take a credit holiday and let some inquires age.

I had trouble getting in with Citi at first but realized that it's a very rewarding experience to be a Citi cardholder. Good luck!
