How to Save Money on the Cost of Prescription Medication

save-money-on-prescription-medication

The rising cost of prescription drugs is something that many people worry about. This is particularly true among those who are currently taking one or more medication as a means of improving their health.

While you may have no choice but to purchase prescription medication on a regular basis, there are some basic steps you can take to save money. Here are some ideas to consider:

1. Search for a Generic

Brand name pharmaceuticals are not your only option. Depending on the drug, you may be able to find a generic at a fraction of the cost.

Speak with your doctor about this, as he or she can discuss all your options.

2. Don’t Shop Local

Many people opt to have their prescriptions filled at a local pharmacy, but this isn’t always the best way to save.

Have you given any thought to using a mail order pharmacy? Although you’ll have to wait for your medication to arrive by mail, the potential cost savings is sure to put a smile on your face.

Tip: if you are going to shop local, compare several pharmacies before deciding which one to use.

3. Ask About Alternative Drugs

Depending on your medical condition, you may find that there is more than one drug available. Once again, this is something you need to discuss with your medical team.

An example of this would be medication for high blood pressure. There are many of these on the market, with some more affordable than others. As long as an alternative drug can provide the same health benefits, it may be worth the change.

There is no guarantee that implementing one or more of these tips will help you save on the cost of prescription medication, but each one is worth a try.

I think its very important to have this conversation with your doctor. They should be involved in the cost and if its too high, they can recommend other lower cost alternatives. They also sometimes have coupons for you.
