With that said I usually carry a little bit of cash for tips, and places that do not accept credit cards.

This Blog brings to light many important concepts for traveling. As a highlight, using a Debit Card exposes your banking accounts to holds and scamming (remember you do not have the same protections as a credit card). Using a credit card is often easier and may even waive off on the Foreign Transaction Fees and offer you benefits for travel such as lost luggage, delayed travel, airport lounge access, waived luggage fee, emergency medical/legal services, WiFi, vehicle rental primary/secondary and so on. Holds generally do not affect your use (unless the card is low limit). When leaving the United States you may be well served by taking a Visa and MasterCard in case something happens to the network, your bank and so on (remember the Boy Scout Motto: "Always Be Prepared"). Another point is the potential need for a card that is EMV Chipped and maybe even Chip & Pin for the unmanned Kiosks (trains). It is reported that American Express is generally useful in major cities and Discover is spotty for availability depending on where you are traveling.
