Thanks for the great information Latoya. I also wanted to add a few expected expenses that usually come up every month that can also wreck your budget. The issue with these is people are not expecting these expenses to be so high! Many people do not prepare, budget, or really see how much they are spending every month on these categories. The trick is to be very diligent and aware of how much you are spending in these areas.
Restaurant/Eating Out: Eating out a lot can completely wreck your budget. Sometimes it does not seem like you are spending a lot of money, but over a month, the amount can really add up. If you are on a tight budget, it is always recommended to eat in when possible and/or try to limit eating out for special occasions.
Alcohol: Purchasing alcohol can become very expensive especially if you purchase it at a restaurant or a bar. A recommendation on limiting your bar tab is to always pay with cash and never start a tab.
Travel: Whether you are traveling by plane, car, or train, traveling can be expensive. When you factor in lodging, food, entertainment, etc., a travel weekend can crush your budget. I would recommend to always plan ahead and estimate what your total cost is going to be to make sure you can afford the travel, and always try to travel with points!
