Sometimes people use them for living expenses. My brother actually received some grants for living expenses.

hi there
my sister took the loan and a have successfully returned it.But the student may be in problem if he is using the money in some other things.

Why would somebody take out a student loan, then spend it on something else? I think that's irresponsible especially if it's not an emergency matter.

I'm paying off my private student loan of $4,900 on March 5th. But keeping my federal loans. My federal loans have much smaller interest rates. Sallie Mae private loans suck, never use them. :\ It sucks that people like myself had to take out private loans anyways. Someone was telling my Obama is trying to make all private loans through the government too. That would be better.

Its not a crime! Actually each student loan is package differently. If some one is in school full time, independent, have dependents within their household who depends on more than 50% of your income, the Federal package that student with extra spending money for themselves and school related. Now, if someone was out there buying (IE) alcohol, drugs and unnecessary shopping sprees, then that is something different. I tell you what, it was a waste of their time because in the long run, it is going to cost the student more. With all the interest rate that occurs over the cost of borrowing, they will learn to think twice.

Well I have seen many people taking students loan and using it in some other thing. That is really bad. They are making it difficult for the students who actually take those loans for their study.

Thanks a lot Buddie! I still have the chills about finding a job in these cut back days. You have just mentioned a powerful statement about "From thirty-five years of work experience, being a student is harder than working...!" I just completed a persuasive essay to argue an authors point about her being a student, who quit it her full time job to continue school full-time, and how easy it is for her. Wow, I was like.....home-girl must either be a dependent on someone, have no dependents what-so-ever, rich, have set steady income from some where, and no bills to pay.

It is hard to attend college working half time, that is why most schools are introducing extended days (such as Saturdays), late hours, on line courses, and one on one counselors to accommodate their students, reduce drop out rates, and encourage them to return back to school. Its seems pretty easy when we hear others attending or successfully completing college, but trust me, there was a plan involved some where down the line. Stumbling blocks is a mother while attending college, but we have to override or fight it in order to succeed.

You are so funny, Meya. This has been a rough semester for me too, I took five classes, college algebra was one of them, so I feel your pain. I plan on taking seven next semester, because I'm just ready to be finished with the whole undergrad thing. Needless to say, I am enjoying these few weeks I have without going to classs or having to worry about studying (except for the LSAT in my free time)

OK Charon, how is it looking on your end? You have been quiet (also Kmoney) just like I have, so I know it is due to school, please lets keep in contact on the education level, this is really important for us. I think I am going to continue on to grad school in the summer, but I need a break right now. There are too many pieces that I must put back together before I crash.

Well, its all over for me! I finally completed my BA Dec 19th, 2009. A year or so behind schedule:fun:. I have to start calling these banks because they are sending me booklets to start first payment in the 1st beginning of Jan 2010. So much for deferment, I know I had one before but they were suppose to automatically update my status to in school deferment, and my payments were suppose to kick in 6 months after graduation. Well, I am about to give them a call Monday morning and crack their face. I know it is just an error, but they will want to correct that asap, this is one issue that I will never ever let destroy my credit again.:relieved:

Girl in the end, we will be glad we did and it will payoff if we don't stress ourselves to death before then, lol (just kidding). :white-flag:Thanks for the info, I'm going to contact my advisor next week and start a little research of my own online.

Do you know of any other alternatives? At this point, I would rather only owe student loans when I graduate than both.

Well, there is another way out, apply for many scholarships possible starting with your school first. Try Cal grants because they pay off well, but when you get to the end, they go to someone else because you will not qualify if you are below full time (or half time I think). This is for undergrads, so if you are a grad student then your fin aid counselor got the hook up. They don't tell you unless you ask, and don't take no for an answer. I just stopped qualifying for scholarship from my school because of the C I got twice. Who cares, I am at the end anyway, but it did help out.

I know how it feels with the finals because I just came back from taking one today. My stomach was in a knot the entire time. I made some cheat sheets but the proctor kept looking me in my face. So what I did was wrote some of the problems down and stuck it in my pocket and went to the restroom to work them out. Well to my surprise, none of the questions were on my cheat sheet, that is what I get from sneaking and cheating. I was only allowed 1 cheat sheet and I had 3 hid under my shirt.

I hope i passed my exam because I had a hard time this semester, my school is known for hard math, and I have done some researching around other schools, their Math 20 (intermediate math) is nothing like ours. If I fail this class, I will go take it at another school and transfer it back or leave mines. I will be a fool to pay another $2k (darn near) for the same class. I am taking bricks and motor next semester for my last class which is statistics because I need to see and hear lecture at the same time, this cyber course wore me out, and the cold part about it, I did not learn anything.

Thanks so much for the in-depth reply, Meya. I have been studying for finals and the LSAT so forgive me for my late response. I'm just wondering what's too much in terms of student loans, because I wanted to borrow enough to pay off ALL of my revolving debt, but that private loan is not looking as appealing as it was before. Besides, I don't want anymore inquiries until 2010. Do you know of any other alternatives? At this point, I would rather only owe student loans when I graduate than both.
