Is it true that if you commit to AmeriCorps for a certain period, a certain portion of your student loan can be forgiven?

Yes you can! Contact your lender and let them know your current situation. As long as you are not in default, you should be all good. Some lenders provide download forms online, so take a look at it. If this is a private loan, they work sort of different from Federal Loans. Deferments are not provided as often and some make you pay interest while in deferment (or Forbearance).

Yeah, be careful because I think all private loans will apply interest while you're in deferment status. When I was in school I made interest only payments. That may be something you choose to do.

after I finish school, if I couldn't find a job that can sustain my daily expenses as well as payments for my student loan, can I defer my payments until after I find a better job? Is there a program for this?

congratulations! it always feels great to complete payments on any kind of loan.

I payed off my private loan within 6 months. I still have about $1,800 in federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans. I plan on taking my time with those. Also, in the fall I'll be going back to school it sounds like. All my loans were for general education, now I am planning on furthering my career in health-care to a nurse or respiratory therapist. Currently I work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

Good fight, good fight; SallieMae - for student loans are now history for me!

I made my final payment of $5,000.55 tonight on my private loan. That's right I am high on life right now.

Cheers!

I did not hear about the private loans but they are already taking over loans that were made through banks. I have three accounts with Chase, 2 have went to ACS Educational loans (the gov) but the other is private. Since my private loan did not go anywhere, I am not for sure if they are buying them.

When they have us in the financial aid office, we are so stunned about how long we have to be there and they do not warn us about which bank they are signing us up with. Their main focus is to make sure we are not in default with the education department period. We better keep our eyes open, because they will stick you into a private loan so quick until it is not funny. They are totally different from gov student loans

I've heard the government might be taking over all private loans... Do you know anything about this? It's all rumors. O_o
