Here is a little tip that I picked up here at the Credit Union where I work, if you know you are ging to purchase a large item contact your debit card holder and inform them that you need your card limit increased for 24 hours...ie that you are buying a computer also ask the merchant if they can run it threw as a credit purchase instead of a debit transaction most Financial Institutions give more avalbility for this.

I know here your debit card daily cash limit is $500.00 & purchase is $2500.00 but like I said if you know you are ging to purchase a large item call the credit card departmet and inform them of your purchase and they can adjust the amount for you for 24 hours. They usually do this for 24 hours to protect them as well as you they don't want to have to replace $5,000.00:innocent:

Its not the atm, but the scammers who put the attachment into it. I did a quick google, her is some info sort of close to where you were. They incidents I read were actually from my city.

1. Gas pump fraud http://www.wtop.com/?sid=1453928&nid=104
2. bofa atm fraud http://www.myballard.com/2008/12/04/atm-fraud-at-bank-of-america/
3. Story of "skimmers" (technology fraud) http://news.cnet.com/8301-10789_3-10062529-57.html

Thanks Meya, I don't know what I thought I read, thanks for clearing that up.

Really Meya, those type atm's haven't hit ATL, yet, but our ATM's do just about everything else. None my cards offer the paypass thing, but I think its pretty neat.

There will always be errors with credit cards so expect the unexpected. I have probably have 4 back-ups to my BOA Visa. That's how prepared I am.

Charonh, if that happened, I would use another credit card. Always have back-ups.

I did after that happened and this happened when I used my debit card (BOA, to be exact, not a credit card). I shouldn't be forced to use my credit card if I hadn't planned on using it.

I use speedpass when I can. If you like to shop at exxon for gas, I suggest it. Speedpass is linked to a cc, so when you use it to pay, it charges your cc. The Speedpass is contactless, so all you have to do is waive it at the counter or at the pump.

My Chase Freedom has the contactless swipe thing as does my Amex Clear. It is a great thing to have, but not many places in my area actually have it. I have seen it at my local CVS and McDonald's. I don't know why more CC's and retail places have that.

Hey interjack, I was looking on the news a few months ago about using the machines outside to pay (I think there was a story started here). Someone was actually rigging the strips to where when you slide it in, they were retrieving your personal info and misusing it. That had me paranoid every since, I now go inside or to the window to use my card. :worried:

All creditors will do that, it's nothing new. If they see multiple charges within a short period of time, they assume that the card is stolen and the thief is attempting to get away with some merchandise without paying for them.

I have had this with my Chase cc, I went got gas and then went in and got a drink, then went to kinkos for some copies (you put in your card for copy machine to work not at register), then went to walmart to pick up my new eye glasses, Declined, standing there at Walmart looking like what!? Used Walmart phone called Chase and they said well we saw mulitlple charges at the two last locations and the system shut down the card. He reset the card and then it worked. I can see now, with my new glasses  I even know some places like fast food have this built into their system if your card is swiped at their store twice in an hour a manager has to override the trans before it will go thru.
