eldarwen's review: Callout Comment I had e-mailed Amex a few months back to see if I could convert my Blue card to a Clear or a Blue Cash. When Amex responded, they said that I was eligible convert and which one would I like. I chose the Clear. I chose the Clear because after reading all the information, it was a card that would most likely have more benefits to me than the Blue Cash.

But my saga began before I converted to the Clear. When I signed in to my account to pay my bill, I had noticed that they had cut my credit limit from $2,000 to $500. That is a $1,500 difference. I called up Amex to see why they had done that. I was told that I have too many inquires and did not like the balance on one of my other cards. I was angry. I had worked hard to pay my balances down but it was not good enough. The $500 limit is a toy limit to me and will not get me far. I was not happy that they cut my limit. Amex is getting only spartan usage until I get some credit line increases.

I Have Better Options User Icon on 2008-09-02

Remarks My only good thing right now is that I have better options than Amex. I have my Discover card, my two Chase cards, etc, with better limits

Closed My Account Also User Icon on 2008-09-02

Remarks This was the only card, AMEX green, I kept open after my layoff. Thought it would be the best because I new I couldn't get employment where I lived at the time and would have to travel. When I returned from a job interview out of town I had a letter from them that after review they were closing my account.

Remarks I am so sorry that this happened to you. What were they thinking if it was an issue why did they convert the card. That just pisses me off.

Remarks Amex is getting so ridiculous!! I personally think its their way of weeding out cardmembers who don't fit their upper tier of cardholders. I can't stand Amex. So sorry this happened to you, but I'm not surprised. They are masters of pulling off dirty deeds to customers. They did same thing to me years ago, and lost a 200k+ in charges per year for my businesses. I told them where to put that card, and took all my business back to Citi, and haven't regreted a moment since making that decision!

If you want an Amex branded card, try Citi first, then maybe BOA.

I Converted Before The CLD User Icon on 2008-09-03

Remarks I had converted my card before they gave me a CLD. So I pretty much had the new card in my grubby hands. They probably couldn't do a thing (besides close it) because they sent me the card.

Sorry To Hear That. User Icon on 2008-09-03

Remarks Well I could tell you that Amex is losing there high status.

I have AMEX and if they lower my credit line I will probably lose it.

and yes I feel worried because I hear a lot of comments like this and my advise is sock drawer them.

but hang in there we all are hearing this going on with many banks,

so don't close them but like everybody says sock drawer.

Good luck to you.

I Am A Little Worried User Icon on 2008-09-03

Remarks I am a little worried about this because my credit file is very thin. My credit history is only a little over three years old and I have 6 cards and the highest limit on any of the cards is $5,000 (Chase Freedom). I can't do anything about my credit history age. That is why Amex is sock drawered and I am using two cards right now.
