wildrage2's review: Callout Comment I put a hold on applying for new credit, however when I received a preapproval letter for a Capital One business card in the mail today I could not resist. I applied for this card back in November and was denied, so I thought this invitation (complete with fake plastic credit card) was a signal to try again.

I went online, punched in reservation #, etc... Congratulations, you are DENIED. I really wish they would get their act together. I am a Capital One cardholder, so I would think they knew my credit history.

I'm sending the invitation back to them in the mail, along with a note asking them to clean up their act and remove the inquiry from my report.

It's Not Just You! User Icon on 2008-05-23

Remarks I don't think they can reverse the inquiry at all.

it's funny, ( not at your expense mate!) but same thing happened to me with Citibank before.

I got a pre approved letter on the mail with a guaranteed 4500 CL.

same as you, I giddilly applied..

guess what? Denied..

i even spoke to a CS and asked what happened.

they gave me the same BS that my score didn't meet their standards, that I have some late payments ( in reality, I don't have any late payments!, etc!)

i think most banks are like that,

they'll send you pre-approved application letter without careful consideration of your scores... Then when you apply, that's the only time they'll be SERIOUS in terms of the application

oh well! Lesson learned

Preapprovals Are Just That..... User Icon on 2008-05-23

Remarks I agree with both of you.

Pre-approvals are just that, normally they've already processed a "soft sweep" on your credit file anyway.

I would say try State Farm Visa, but since your laying off of applying, I would put to much emphasis on this creditor.

They're confused or something. Bad practices.

Remarks Try calling CS and ask them what was the reason for denial and maybe we can help you out and do something from there.

Did The Same Thing To Me User Icon on 2008-05-24

Remarks I got a preapproval like 5 times before my bk last year and was denied all 5 times... I didn't approach them they approached me!!! but one week after my charge off they sent me a preapproval letter and I got a $1000 line to start!!! that was sept of 07 and in Feb of 08 I got bumped to $`1500!!! strange how they do things... Sometimes doesn't make sense... I also got something stranger from chase... I had my biggest portion of my bk with them( and it was n't small!!! Let me tell you!!!) and I got a preapproval for a home equity loan from them... I am going to assume a computer gliitch and not even taking the chance to apply..

Remarks I wrote a negative review about this card a week or 2 ago. I got an invitation in the mail and was denied anyway... Really pisses me off. Anyway, I got the denial letter in the mail on Saturday. I was sort of happy to see that they cited nothing from my past horrible credit file. They noted that I had too many recently opened accounts, and a bad utilization. My utilization isn't THAT bad, but I was recently in CA and ran the cards up to a little more then I would have like (isn't hard to do when you only have $500 limits). On a couple of cards I was at say $300 balance with a $500 limit (these were all paid this week).

I was going to come on here and completely recant my review, as capital one can't forsee what my utilization is at time of application when they send out an invitation... BUT... They ticked me off again because I got another invitation to apply for the very same card TODAY. So on Saturday I get a rejection letter and on Monday I get an invitation to apply... Mixed messages anyone? Needless to say, I won't be applying.

Just as an aside, I wrote a review about 2 weeks ago about First Premier not giving me a CLI but offering me another one of their Platinum cards. I ignored it, but I have since gotten 3 more mailings from them, 3 e-mails, and a phone call. I wish we could selectively decline what cards we want soliciting us. I want to get mailings from some cards, such as Capital One, HSBC, and the big guys, but I wish that cards like First Premier would just screw off lol...

Remarks If I was you I would probably call customer service and question what the letter is all about. I mean on there pre-approval notices, they seem to be liking something on you credit report... I have been trying to get back in the good graces of capital one for quite some time (they were my 1st charge off like 6 years ago, but its been paid for more than 4)... I did receive a pre-approval back in Jan and applied and than was denied, but haven't received anything else from that point...

Remarks Do you have HSBC?... You might have to opt out with CapOne. Hopefully Meya will see this posting and give you to info to do so. I know when I applied for Target and approved... I've received 4 card offers... With the same company under different Card names. Some cards place in their agreements/etc that they can share your information... Contact CapOne...

Oh God...HSBC User Icon on 2008-06-02

Remarks I got an Orchard card in January. Just last week I did the preapproval thing and got preapproved for the cash or fly card... I figure what the heck and hit the apply button... DENIED: You have recently opened an HSBC account. I mean damn... It was 5 months ago... I wonder how long you have to wait?

As for Capital One, I have a weird relationship with them. I use their card HEAVILLY. When I mean heavilly, I mean that I travel a lot and use it for rental car / hotel. On my statement this month it said that I made 1100 worth of payments and have 1000 worth of charges... But my card only has a $500 limit. I literally pay my balance off days after I charge.

I also opened up a business about 4 months ago. I got the Federal Tax ID and everything... And they are sending me info on the small business accounts.

I don't know...

Scores User Icon on 2008-06-02

Remarks Just to add... When I originally applied for capital one and orchard in Nov/Dec my FICO was at around 565. Right now it's at about 618 but with tons (and I mean tons of inqurieis)... I'd say around 12 or 13 on each agency. I have also opened up 10 cards in the past 8 months. I have been really good at stopping myself for even applying, but these darn 'invitations' mess with my head!

Cap One User Icon on 2008-06-02

Remarks Thats a hard one. There's no real rhyme or reason with cap one... They seem to pick and choose who to approve and deny. And those darn computer generated pre=approvals just keep coming. I own several restaurants and they are always sending info for business accounts, corporate cards, etc. I just pitch them in the trash. Orchard is funny also, I have had an account 3 years now, just got my cash rewards account last month, and upgraded my classic to gold today and was also offered an increase. the backdoor acct mgr said they like accounts opened for at least 1 year before having a higher chance for approval for another account.

Hope this answers or helps some. But if I were you, I would just keep going with my payments, aging of accounts, build the score, let those inquiries drop off, and get into the big banks. Once you get one of those cards buddy, they will come knocking once they see if on your bureau. And you will have the last laugh!!

Remarks If you are getting offers from Cap-1, they are softing you. Trust me, they sent letters out every week for years until I gave up and surrendered LOL... When I pulled my Equifax report I noticed that they had been doing soft inquiries on my report for promo's. I agree there must be something they like or you wouldn't be getting the offers... Also make sure you app with them 90 days apart...

Remarks Have you heard about Advanta before? I heard that they are a good card to starting build business credit because your personal and business credit reports are two totally different reports. They will help you establish business credit. Some of their cards are listed on this website in the credit card database section.
