islandlo36's review: Callout Comment I got a pre-approval at the checkout and decided to go for it. Got approved in December 07 for $200. I have been using the card to make small purchases every month since. Every month I have paid off the balance in full. To my surprise, I got a credit limit increase to $500.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get upgraded to a target Visa?

Remarks I believe you have to be a heavy user/big spender to be able to upgrade to the VISA.

Remarks Put it like this, be glad that you got a cli with them. I have experienced this card for 5 months with an initial cl of $200 and did not get no further than that. They treat you wrong with the store card (as far as good starting and cli's), if you EVER GET the Visa, let us know about it.

Honestly... User Icon on 2008-03-30

Remarks We shopped so much at Target we always had a running balance on it. They upgraded us automatically after having the card for about 2 years. When we were upgraded we were at a point in our lives when we did not want another Visa, and they didn't give us a choice. We actually called and asked for our store card back, and the rep told us they were trying to wean out the store cards and we had no choice. Either upgrade or cut it up! Well, we weren't ready to part with the card, so we stuck with it. Now I know the rep lied to us! They weren't weaning out their store cards. Target is weird, but I still love them.

What Were Your Scores? User Icon on 2008-03-30

Remarks Target likes to see high 500 to mid 600 for a store card, for the Visa you should have mid 600 and above. Generally if you are carrying high balances on other CC store or otherwise then will not give you a Visa.

Remarks I received the card in November 07 and charged a playstation 2 on it and paid it off. In Feb 08 target increased my limit from 200(applied online) to 500. Some people get cli's in three months and some don't is a mystery.

How Do They Pre-approve You? User Icon on 2008-03-30

Remarks Does anyone know how Target pre-approves you at checkout? Do you have to pay with a credit card? And if you apply for the pre-appoval at check-out does that show up as an inquiry on your Credit report? And do they ever deny you?

Remarks Well from what I have heard, if you use your debit card, they will (sometimes) offer you a preapproval. Once you accept it, yes it will be a hard inquiry. Preapprovals are invites, but once you accept, you will get an inquiry and it does not mean that you will get approved.

Remarks I got the card 04/2007 w/ $200 and got a CLI on 07/2007 for a total of $500... Im a heavy user of the card, always paid on time and some cases the BIF, never went OCL, and almost a yr later I'm still @ the same $500!!!

I noticed that each time I spent over 40 or 50 bucks I would get a preapproval. Thats how the store associate knows when to ask if you want to apply. Even NOW that I have the card, and if I pay w. Debit or another CC, they STILL ask if I want to apply for a card. They are a bit weird.

Remarks I had gotten a pre-approval in November of 07 at the checkout and instead I went home and applied online. When I did that they denied my app. I got another preapproval at the checkout and decided to go for it and I got approved. The funny thing is that it was only 1 month after my denial. Isn't that weird?

Remarks At the check out they can verify you are who you say you are Target has one of the highest level of fraud accounts so by applying at check out you have to show ID and a major card or debit card, this way they in fact know it is you. Glad you got approved but that is now 2 hard pulls on your credit report which will remain for 2 years.
