How to Negotiate the Price of Appliances

How to Negotiate the Price of Appliances

If you find yourself in the market for new appliances, you may be surprised at two things: the selection and the cost.

On the plus side, there are a variety of models to choose from. Conversely, it seems that the cost of appliances continues to rise with each passing year.

No matter what you think about the price, it’s good practice to negotiate with the store before making a purchase. This is easier said than done, but there are some basic steps you can take to improve your change of success:

1. Know Your Stuff

In short, you need to know which store in your area has the lowest price. From there, visit several others to see if the competition can offer something better.

As long as you have the right information in hand, such as a store ad, you put yourself in a position of power.

2. Ask for What You Want

Rather than ask for a “discount” you should go into the negotiation process with a particular price point in mind. For example, ask the sales associate if they can knock 10 percent off the price. Or ask if they are able to offer free delivery if you buy today.

It’s much easier to get a better deal when you ask for something specific.

3. Your Payment Method

Many stores will offer a discount based on the way you pay for your purchase. For example, you may be able to open a store credit card for an immediate discount off the purchase price. This doesn’t mean you have to use the credit card in the future. You can simply use it to save money on your purchase and then decide what to do with it at a later date.

There is no guarantee that a store will negotiate with you when buying appliances. Even so, as a large purchase, you owe it to yourself to try.
