7 Easy Ways to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel

7 Easy Ways to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel

As you get more and more excited about renovating your kitchen, there will always be one thing lingering in your mind: the cost.

Many people are under the impression that it takes tens of thousands of dollars to “do a kitchen right.” There’s no denying that you can spend this much (or more), but you don’t have to.

Below, you’ll find seven easy ways to save money on the cost of a kitchen remodel:

1. Shop around. It’s easy to believe that big box stores, such as Home Depot, will have the lowest prices. However, as you shop around, especially with the help of the internet, you may soon find that this is not true.

2. Don’t change the layout. As tempting as it may be, keep your layout the same. When you begin to make changes, it won’t be long before you are tearing down walls, moving gas lines, and rerouting plumbing. All of these things cost a lot of money, which quickly bites into your budget.

3. Buy used. You don’t have to buy everything used, but keep your eye out for some good deals in your local area. For example, it’s not uncommon to find appliance deals on Craigslist.

Once you get over your fear of buying used, you may soon find that this is among the best ways to save money.

4. Shop online. Mentioned above, it’s worth noting again. Shopping online has become one of the best ways to compare prices and products. When it comes to a kitchen remodel, you may be surprised at just how much you can purchase via the internet. From cabinets to flooring, you’ll find what you’re looking for.

5. Keep an open mind. Maybe you go into the process knowing that you want granite countertops. However, you soon realize that this will break the bank. If you remain flexible, it’s likely that you can find a more affordable product that suits you just fine.

6. Take your time. When you’re in a hurry it’s not uncommon to make a purchase “just to get it over with.” Take a step back, exercise some patience, and shop around until you find the right materials at the right price.

7. Do it yourself. Maybe you can do some of the job yourself. Or if you’re lucky, maybe you can do it all. This is a lot of work, but if you have the skill it can save you thousands of dollars. Remember, it’s expensive to hire a professional contractor!

If you have done a remodel before or know what you are doing, buying online is a huge way to save money. My mother in law has remodeled her kitchen several times over her life, and helped re-do ours. We bought almost everything online which saved us $1000s.
